Competition is everywhere, in every aspect of life. So if it's challenging to find an internship, I guess it's fair enough. Sounds like a very good program though.

The weight of the midterms and final exams varies for each course. Looking at my Commerce courses over the past 3 years, the midterm and final can count for anywhere as low as 35% to as high as 70% of your final mark for the course.

It is probably a bit challenging to find an internship in your first year, but it gets easier in your upper years as students get a better idea of what area they would like to specialize in. There will always be competition for similar jobs, and those who have the edge are the ones who have honed their networking skills.

Thank you! Usually, what percent of your mark is based on the midterm and final exams?

With such a strong teamwork focus, I must also ask about the competition at QC. Do you feel that there is "cut-throat" competition, especially when everyone could be competing for similar jobs?

The current practice for the first two years is the same as you experienced Kat, lots of group work right from the beginning of the program.

Hi Arcanage,
Yes, you typically have teams for every Commerce course--and for a majority of the assignments, you will be working in these teams. Over the past three years, I only remember submitting one individual paper in my Commerce classes. Whether this has changed, I can't be positive. Independent work comprises of your midterm exam and your final exam marks. At the end of a major team project, you are given the opportunity to fill in a peer evaluation form and based on responses, the professor may change the mark distribution.

Some teams are formed by the students, some are randomly assigned, and some teams are chosen by the professor who will work to evenly balance all teams based on strengths and interests.

How is independent work balanced with team work? eg. 50/50?

Finally, how are teams formed? Is it random draw, or do you pick your own teammates?
